I was born deaf and grew up in Hamilton, Waikato. I am an independent person that nothing will stop me from doing anything. My roles are a Deaf historian/researcher, community support worker, advocator for people with disabilities including Deaf and gardener. My home is in Eureka, outside of Hamilton City and have a hearing partner with three large dogs. What a blissful life here!
June 24th 2021, waking up in the early hours of this morning – blimey freezing as we walked on the floor, and my partner lets the dogs out for a run.

Young Nova, the dog, walked on tipping paw each time she walked on the grassy and Nova came back as soon as cuddling up to my legs. Sheer, Joseph, and Jazz came back and begged for dog treats as soon they walked up to the pantry door.
Yep, Jack Frost banged on the first day of the frost session this month. Unfortunately, the temperature record was -2.8C – ouch, while the King Country area received -3.5C. Wondering if blueberries shrubs are okay through overnight or not! Blimey as I recorded in the gardener magazine while checking the weather forecast from the iPad.
Made lunch for dad for I call him as he is my hearing partner while he gets ready for his work. Our dogs munching their favourite dog treats while I drink a cup of coffee. Oh, dear! It was time for dad to leave for work on the freezing cold morning.
Dogs and I followed dad out in the sunroom, checking his movement. We are still working on installing another spotlight in the carport facing the gate of the road. Watching dad leave for work as dogs ran back to one of the doors, for they knew a large dog biscuits bag stashed away. Oh sigh! I want to go back to bed and have a proper sleep, for I did not sleep well overnight. Went into the room where there is a large dog biscuits bag and grabbed several Tux biscuits as it was there favourite snacks.
Checking the clock and sigh, the boys caught their school bus on the opposite side of the road. Went back to sleep for another half an hour before getting up to catch up on emails, preparing meals and let our dogs out for another long run. Sun came out peeping through the window! Cor blimey, it is still freezing morning, and what shall I have for breakfast. Sleeping away until another disturbing and Jazz barking at the regular walking along the road. Time to get up for our dogs played with me on the bed. Mm. Ahh, why not a porridge on my own, for dad was not here with me through winter during the week.

One day, something struck my mind when I watched my partner – Rusty preparing roast tea – roast chicken with potatoes, kumara and pumpkins. I asked him if he has turned over the vegetables and his responses were nope. Why not? He said I don’t really have to turn over, just leave there until ready. Oh crap, and never mind! I said to Rusty.
Our oven is getting very old and barely cook the top only, not the bottom or fan bake with the broken bottom element. I think, and we know the mice or rat been at the back of the oven for many years. We just bought a new fridge-freezer as our old one lasted 28 years several weeks ago. We do have an excellent medium fan bake oven – not a large one. I bought a medium fan bake oven several years ago, and I used to place it on the bench, which is brilliant and quick to cook. I asked Rusty why does he not use this portable fan bake oven. Nope, can not be bothered to take it out of the cupboard! Sigh!
I noticed some of my friend’s husbands do the same things like can not be bothered to turn over, leaving a mess etc.
This picture was taken late afternoon when I got home from work as a specialised community worker for one Deaf with CP (Cerebral Palsy) and speech impaired elderly chap. Rusty was preparing a lovely roast chicken with roast vegetable tonight. He made banana and chocolate chips muffins this morning as he told me.
Hey, about this one? Can man cook a meal or not? Can they follow the instruction or not? I seldom know most men can cook differently from women where else by not reading the instruction. My Rusty does not really follow the instruction, just taking the ingredient out of the cupboard and work out instead of doing the correct measurement. I noticed rather odd for quite a long time – why does he put hot water into the butter, so the butter melt? A couple years ago we bought a microwave as we don’t have one in the last 15 years or more. Rusty saw me putting the butter to melt in the microwave for under 1 minute and put in the wet ingredient when I made a coffee cake. He goes, ohhhh and is that how I do when I am making.
One Deaf with CP and speech impaired elderly chap and everywhere we go out to do his grocery, paying the bills, shopping and lunch. He continuously checks his watch as his habits from his late parents. For example, we must have lunch at 12noon, an afternoon tea at 3pm, and arrive to pick him up on time. He can tell how long we have been travelling from Hamilton to Raglan or to Cambridge.
The reality that men prefer to stick in one path direction by leaving women goes all over the places, moves/shift further outward from one path. Just like men are from Mars, women are from Venus.

I recall through many photos while cleaning up any identical images from the Cloud Drive storage. April is here, and May will come within a few weeks, and I saw this photo. This photo reminded me of where it was taken during the Lockdown Level 4 rolled to Level 3 in 2020.
A few days, I was helping the Deaf man (Stephen – not real name) to install the new free wifi modem, but there was a problem with the connection to his mobile. I was not allowed to enter his flat as a deaf essential worker. There were guidelines from the MOH (Ministry of Health) and the approved details when working or helping other invalid people, people with disabilities, during the Lockdown. I signed to Stephen outside his flat within 2 metres, and I tried to figure out the problem with his connection. NOTE: a free modems were under the Government Funding through COVID via Social Service where I worked. Thank you, Skinny Jump, for provided modem to any low-income families, including people with disabilities, so they can pay $5 per data of the Gb each month.
I decided to contact someone I know through Hamilton West School, and he is an IT person. His name is Duoiane, and he did the network connection job here when Peter and I moved from Hamilton to Eureka in 2014. Duoiane was happy to assist with the modem connection to the mobile. The day before this photo was taken, it was a bad day because my dead tooth cracked, and it was so bloody painful even the night before. I made the booking through the Facebook message to my Dentist the day before the photo was taken. Note: my dead tooth had been around, so a long time, over 20 years and this tooth refused to pull out even I do not have any pain until 2020.
The next day, I headed out to the Dentist first thing in the morning. I waited outside until the staff checked my temperature reading and filled out the particular form under the Lockdown. We went inside the building and started the process of removing the cracked tooth. The Dentist staff tried to remove by using three different sizes of piler/clamps. Finally, the broken tooth out then, followed by a numb check and a jaw. I found it hard when I tried to talk; never mind, there is always sign language.

Off to pick up the modem and a couple mobiles from Stephen and speak in sign language outside his flat. He worried how long it will take to reset or re-fix, and I told him that the IT person lives on the other side of the lake. Maybe a couple hours or so! I headed over to the other side of the lake and texted Duoiane to say I am at their driveway gate. I walked up to his front door, and his wife greeted me at the porch within 2 metres of social distances. I placed a modem, a couple mobiles and details of the server and password on the table in the patio area.
I walked back to my car as it was a sunny day while nursing my left side of my face. That goodness, I took a couple pain relief!
Admiring the side of the lake, colourful leaves falling down, while the cold airbrushing along with the trees. And everyone who walked along the footpath. I felt the cold and sharp wind against my body while the sun shining on me. The colourful leaves were yellow, reddish, and brownish, lay on the footpath reminded me that Autumn was here. Yes, it was Autumn time, for I recalled during the Lockdown 4 and 3 in 2020.

Sitting down to start the day in the home office while hubby – Peter is recovering from his hip/pelvis surgery on the six weeks. Video conference emergency flashing notification message from a Deaf caller on the desktop, was the first thing to start the day at 930am. Click and start the video conferencing to find a silly and confused contractor who was lost for his job by his Fibre Company and asking for the request on which Kia Oranga (formerly Housing New Zealand) house. Guided him by describing the house in front of the Deaf person’s rented house by Kia Oranga. He located the right house and hung up the video call. Resume checking my diary, checking, checking appointments until Peter yelled out Mummmmmm, and came into the home office, the printer won’t print. Sigh!
A few moments at a time, I sorted out the printer and stopped for a coffee break to calm my annoying of having distracted. Nova, our young dog, bought home a ‘throw out bread crust’ for I know Peter threw put from the kitchen windows. Oh, bother, I decided to leave this and head back to the home office, so I continue to work.
Barking, barking, swiftly, swiftly go the noise, I went out to investigate where dogs are doing, and Peter is painting the side door. Our dogs had been chasing tractor pass down the road. Sigh! Walk back to the home office and found a notification message flashing on the desktop, waiting for me to answer. It was the caller from the UK about the disability news – Deafblind group. It was lovely to receive their story from them.
Moving on to my course materials where I was supposed to do the assignments since Peter was out of the hospital. Reading the materials and thought of something to take notes and details in the course materials. Another flashing message popped up, asking if I am free to chat over a grave concern or not. Oh well, why not! Rats the update software popped up at the same time I was prepared to send the chat to the Deaf caller. I was waiting for the downloading software to finish and finally hit the chat video button. We chatted over the issues, then noticed my time near for my quick lunch and headed off to my appointment in the city of Hamilton.
Finally, I came home but guess what! Peter lets our dogs out as the dogs were pleased to see me at the front gate, where I headed to open the gate. I gave them a command to stay, so I get in my car and move inside the property before heading to the carport. Quickly out of the vehicle while our dogs chasing around the car and came to me while I closed the gate. I turned and found Peter was standing near the carport, and I did not hear him telling our dogs to stay. He has amused us as we walked back to the house. I saw our side door freshly painted in greyish colour. That was a nice colour for a change from dark blue as the door had been weather battered down over a few years. We have a coffee break, then Peter off to rest his hip and pelvis, and I head back to the home office to do more works. I was hoping no more distracted or disrupted while I am working until nearly dinner time.
There was never-ending as Nova got vomiting, Peter had done the rubbish bag ready to take out, our middle dog – Jazz barking at the person who walked past, and then our older dog Joseph wanting to sleep under the work table. More emails came through, and I have a quick check through emails. I decided it was time to stop and take the rubbish bag out by keeping the dogs inside so I can have a breather while walking down the private road. I turned around to check our fields – ohhhh, for God sake! Peter let the dogs out, so they came to find me on the other side of the fence. I walked back to the gate for the dogs to know that they stayed until I closed the gate. A few more jobs to do outside, such as locked the garage side door and the greenhouse double doors before heading back to the house as dinner time already.
That was my daily routine around at home while Peter is recovering from the surgery since six weeks ago.
Coming home from work and admiring the broad landscape during the lovely hot summer. One problem IS Waikato did not have any heavy rain for four years. The vast country farm’s landscape bearing signs of brunt brownish, and there are not much greener grasses left surrounding the farmland. It is an early stage of becoming drought for all greater Waikato and Waipa.

There have been changing global warming over many years, which is the sign of the longest drought we face and prepare for the worst. In the Waikato area, we prepare to save water by collecting rainwaters into the storage case/tanks through the Winter, BUT we did not have the heaviest rainfall for such long times. We, local farmers, regularly check the water tanks, streams and entrapment streams, and some of the farmers plan large water storage ponds for their cows. It is still not enough for ALL local farmers and orchardists around Waikato and Waipa. We are not living in the Greater Auckland area as Waikato and Waipa lie outside the boundaries lines. Our water comes from the Waikato River – the longest river of the North Island and outside the Auckland area.

Northland – land area 12,504 kilometres. The Northland region has a vast farming area, and they are already on the brink of another longest drought over 23 years. Northland is prone to drought. Auckland – land area 4,941 kilometres BUT high population where Auckland Council can not cope or catch up with continuing growth high population, lack of leadership, planning and delay projects. The result of the actions was to due financial blowout budgets or under budget due to the demand for roads, transports, lack of land for housing, and slow time-consuming. In Auckland, there are five reservoirs in the Waitakere ranges that supply Auckland. Note that Greater Auckland is NOT a rural area, it is an urban city where there are over million peoples using high intake water for the businesses, households and transports. Of course many of the businesses are using high volume of water blasters for car businesses, and cleaning out waste chemicals in the industries and many other way of using high intake water in the businesses. The Auckland council have a very different guideline on when and when not to use high water intake including water blaster. I disagree with their guideline and water restriction.
The Waikato region council observed the water level, maintaining the roads, population growth to match housing demands, farming, livestock, and many other things. Because they have projects for a ten years goal plan along with the financial cost and budget. We recently have a couple of the largest projects underway, and there are Waikato Express Motorway from Bombay to Cambridge via Hamilton and Ruakura Inland Port.
Every year we, Waikato people, receive reminder letters and notices about the water level, a reminder on restricted using water during the Summer season, and how can we use water. For example, hand watering the garden between 6am-8am, no water blasters, and soaking water in the ground.
Last year, we, the Waikato people, learnt the new from Auckland City Council, begging to borrow the Waikato River – 200 million litres per day to feed all Aucklanders and businesses. Simultaneously, the Waikato River is almost low because they – Aucklanders desperate for more water and their lakes, including a small number of water storages running very low. There were many debates between Waikato Regional Council, Hamilton City Council, Auckland Council – Watercare company, Waikato River Authority, Māori Board.

The local Eureka community received our latest newsletter in our rural mailboxes last week, and inside the newsletter, I checked how much rainfall and temperature we have experience here. It appeared that we did not receive heavy rain and increasing the weather, which up to 30C over the last two months.

There is much different cosmology around the world, for example, Religious Cosmology or Biblical Cosmology.
Several weeks ago, one Deaf Christian woman posted the comment and the photo. She mentions that her hobby is astronomy – stars, spaces and Egyptian people like Cleopatra, Thutmose or Nefetria. It is not very clear because her English is not so good and she signed in the video for what she means to talk about her favourite hobby. The deaf blogger presume is that she was signing about Egyptian Idols rather astronomy.
Surely there has been confusing the difference between Cosmology and astronomy. It is difficult to explain to someone when a D/deaf person may be reading this than anyone else.

The Egyptian Gods are different from Biblical/Religions, and here is a quote here.

It is not about Cleopatra, Thutmose or Nefetria as the Deaf woman mentions on Facebook. For example, Cleopatra was a living goddess (Queen of the Nile), and she was not Egyptian because her bloodline traced back to Macedonian Greece and Ptolemy I Soter.
John Goodricke spent his time on his investigation of variable stars around or by 1783. The first discovery was the Algol known as the Winking Demon then the delta cephei. He died very at the age of 22 in 1786.

I was watching the television programme – “Following Twain with Oscar Kightley” this morning. One of the quotes from Twain encouraged me to continue improving my writing/typing blogs and stories as listed above. It gives me more confidence and expands more comprehensive vocabularies and strength in grammar, lexicons, and new words. In the past, my mother, sister, and friends helped me improve and adapted the grammars when I was studied for my BA and many formals letters, even to the government’s MPs as proofreaders. Today I am using technology as a proofreader while I am typing to ensure my grammar, lexicons and spelling check, vocabulary and thesaurus etc. I know everyone does not have the same head grammars when reading or understanding other people writing/typing.

Why? In the late 1960s and 1980s, I attended Hamilton Deaf units from Hamilton West School to Melville High School. We, D/deaf children, spent time learning English writing without sign language as it was forbidden to used sign language in the New Zealand Ministry of Education policy. Yes, the sign language was banned from the 1880s because of the Second International Congress on Education of the Deaf in Milan, Italy. Nevertheless, in 2010, at the 21st International Congress on Education of the Deaf, they received a formal apology in accepting the dangerous ramifications of such ban as an act of discrimination and violation of human and constitutional rights. I know many D/deaf people struggle to learn to improve their reading and writing English today because their first language is sign language and are no longer at school or study at University. The same story with the Bible reading/Theology where D/deaf Christian people want to learn about God, faiths, prayers and other stories by Jesus. When reading, they go through mundane trying to explain by giving the wrong message or answer, typing by doing their best for other people and even understanding what is mean.

Let go back to Twain topic. Who is Mark Twain? Why I love to read Mark Twain. How did I came to his works and learn more about him?
Samuel Langhorne Clemens was the actual real name as his pen name was Mark Twain. My mother and sister love reading books and books anywhere, and my mother was a librarian for many years. One of the books I read was about Helen Kellar and her meeting with Mark Twain. Here is Twain’s quote “I am filled with the wonder of her knowledge, acquired because shut out from all distractions. If I could have been deaf, dumb, and blind, I also might have arrived at something.
“All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure.”
Slowly I learn to understand his quotes and his works like Huckleberry Finn – Tom Sawyer, Letters from the Earth, A Dog’s Tale, or The Wit and Wisdom of Mark Twain. Then I moved up to University where I took and studied my BA in History and Linguistics and Anthropology, more books to read, and understanding from the books to typing assignments. Indeed I have had supported persons like interpreters (sign language), notetakers, proofreaders-assistance person and extra times to spend studying for five and a half years. I asked for more bits of help from my mother and sister to double-check my home assignments to them by faxing or email with an attachment. Dawn of the years studying, I completed my BA degree at last, and I felt great.
I did not realise Twain visited New Zealand until I learnt about the history and language paper at the University. I sourced the books at the library until I found several newspapers, books and Twain’s books about New Zealand.

Every day as a deaf specialised community worker, advocator, tutor, historian, and blogger, I use my thinking cap and start looking out outside or observing the mother’s natures. People doing things strangely, even their behaviour are odd. I dare take the risk of pen wording down to tell a story, blog, or book. This is why I use Twain’s quote – With courage…..
Our lives here at home is an impressive experience, peaceful for my hearing partner, spaces in the property where our dogs run and walk around freely within the fence boundary. Our home is far away from city life, work in the gardens, and relax with a coffee cup in the courtyard.

Stephen was an atheist for many years since he was at the college. Stephen had firmly pointed of many views about the future of humanity, Science and philosophy, disability, Religion, atheism and Politics. Note about Stephen became disability during his final year at the university in the 1960s. Stephen has got a motor neurone disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and neurodegenerative disease before his death in 2018. He was 78 years old and, remarkably, he lived longer than anyone who has had the same symptoms.

Here is a question or more if there was/were word “Astronomy” list in the Bible over many years. Let explore if there is/are any word astronomy in the Bible! In the Bible, the first word is ‘the creator of all things’ in Genesis 1:1. Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies and the whole universe includes the study of stars, planets, galaxies and other objects beyond the earth’s atmosphere. In the Bible, there are many references related to objects such as planets and constellations, for example, the morning star.

So what astronomy mean? It means ‘star formation’ under Greek, and this word allows the branch of science dedicated to studying bodies in outer space. The word “astrolatry” (worship of heavenly objects) basically on the suns, moons and stars as gods. What a minute! Where does the word ‘astronomy’ come from the past? It was not listed in the Bible for we know that. Who wrote the Bible? There are 40, and more authors wrote the chapters, over 1,500 years, and a dispute on who wrote Hebrews. Many Christian people know Moses was the first person he wrote, and John – the disciple of Jesus, was the last person. The language is not English, Greek, Latin or another language from far away like Australia and Italy. However, the three languages were known as Hebrew, koine/common Greek and Aramaic.

Early Summer came along, and the pumpkin seedlings were ready for planting outside. The seedlings were only a finger length size before planting in the soil of the field.
Mm, I decided to look at the fields where there is more sunlight and protect from winds and cold. Simple I found a few places and planted several pumpkin seedlings in the ground.

Rusty came over as he finished mowing the lawn and look, mum! The pumpkin section has shot out and spread over the yard. We went walking over to inspected the pumpkin patch and our dogs for they love to walk with me. There were three watermelon seedlings there right at the gate as well. These seedlings were not big enough but the more they will receive sunlight and water and they will grow quickly. We do have another lot of watermelon plots in the vegetables garden at the back near the barn.

Oh boy! How faring, seedlings grown from finger size to a large patch after all in such short timing in several weeks?
What a delight to see the pumpkin seedlings are in the right spot with plenty of sunshine, warmth, shelter and rain!
In the previous planting were the sunflowers and they grew well except for windy spot. The only way to stop sunflowers falling over or bending over was to tie them up. I will find another site for planting and growing sunflowers away from the windy area—this project added to my gardening project plan.
Yes, we have plenty of pumpkins popping up when I go for a walk and inspect any damage by dogs or pest animals. If the vine gets too big and not feeding back to the pumpkin, I will pinch the vine’s tip so the pumpkin will produce more and bigger even fatter. No matter small or big pumpkin vines you wish for until the summer season is almost ending.

Not a great day to resume work on the 11th January 2021, (primary workplace – Methodist City Action).
Life moved a mystery way when anyone does the gardening, driving to work or to a friend’s pace even to a cafe and have a yard of chatty.
Enjoying the summer day’s chilly morning to do the cleaning up the garden and pruning the roses. Of course, must wear gloves to protect our precious skins of the hands. Approaching on to the sizeable lovely rose shrub in front of the bedroom windows, the roses’ pleasant smell floated through the window. A time prune back this rose shrub and went on to pruning and pruning until a stab into the gloves. Peeled back the glove of the left hand for inspecting a horrible stab thorn for the worst moment. The glove I wore had peeled the top thorn bit, but the bottom bit stabs into the knuckle for the worst moment. That day was on a Sunday 10th of January.
I never had been troubling of having broken thorns or thorns stabbed into my body part except my partner loathe roses around the gardens. He wishes roses should be chopping down. Why? Well, he has been riding on the ‘ride on mower’ when doing the fields needs mowing down, and he gets a few roses prickled into his body.

The next day we went on a trip to my GP as it was my GP’s appointment for I made the appointment in the previous week ago. I was given another tetanus and two other vaccinations for safety risk, just under eight years away from sixty-five years old. Of course, my GP provided a lovely antibiotic which is more powerful and ancient fashion prescription – Amoxicillin clavulanic acid (Penicillin antibiotic).
Ouch, swearing most of the times in the day yesterday and this morning. The joint knuckles are very painful when I move my third finger. Overnight, I was sleeping okay but struggling for our two dogs loves to sleep on the bed and take up space. Currently the garden jobs are on hold for the moment of the week.
